The development of a “trauma system” in the developing world has not been contemplated before, secondary to the lack of vision and the perceived lack of resources. The trauma division is playing a leading role in the creation of a model for the advancement of trauma systems across the world.
CURRENT PROJECTS
- Administration and headquarter of the Panamerican Trauma Society (link to PTS)
- Student Co-President of the PTS Student Committee
- Provision of the ITSDP-PTS Basic Trauma Course in Colombia and Paraguay
- Provision of the PTS Ultrasound in Emergency and Trauma (USET) Basic and advanced course in the USA, Colombia, Panama, Brazil
- Provision of the PTS Advanced Disaster Medical Response course
- Development and Collaboration on the ITSDP/PTS Trauma Registry and ED form
- Training on the ITSDP/PTS Trauma Registry Software and ED form
- Educational International Observership program for students, residents, fellows, attendings and prehospital personnel.
- Establishment of an initial pilot phase Trauma registry in 3 hosptitals in Colombia, 1 hospital in Panama and Ecuador.
- Several Publications in the Panamerican Journal of Trauma, Critical Care and Emergency Surgery
PAST PROJECTS
- Basic trauma course for rural physicians in Ecuador
- Basic Trauma course for prehospital personnel
- Creation of a Trauma ED Form and a complimentary Electronic Trauma Registry data base
- Establishment of an electronic interhospital referral system between the provincial hospitals and the definitive centers outside of the province
- Establishment of a volunteer paramedical system as a collaborative effort between the Red Cross, The Firefighters, and the Civil defense organization
