The basic trauma course is a three day course composed of didactic lectures and hands on skill practice. This course provides basic training in trauma care for the healthcare professionals and workers in rural settings. The course extends beyond hospital care. It is based on a patient pathway system: tracing the management of the patient from the initial site of injury at the scene, to the rural health posts, continuing on to the provincial hospitals, and subsequently to definitive referral centers. The course stresses basic trauma management of patients in a rural setting. Where appropriate, other advanced management options are mentioned depending on resource availability. Emphasis is also based on understanding trauma kinematics, communication, registry and other components of the emergency medical system.
